Re: Cannot drag/place objects in Program monitor

Hello Kevin,

I am working in a brand new project that has not been converted from a previous version and the problem persists.

We are working with 1440p .mp4 footage recorded in OBS from a Logitech webcam, and 1080p .ts files from an elgato game capture card. The framerates are the same, but the webcam footage drifts about 11 frames every hour, so the footage has been rate stretched to be in sync with the clap syncs and the beginning and end of the video. I've been using this same rate-stretch workflow for over a year now at this job, and it is only with the new update that the motion tool has stopped working.

It seems to be confused about what I am trying to click on. I am currently experiencing the issue right now, with two video layers (the webcam and the game footage), and every time I click and drag, the only thing that happens is the other video layer gets selected in the timeline. So with V2 selected, clicking and dragging selects V1, then I immediately click and drag again and V2 gets highlighted once again. Switching to another clip further down the timeline, moving that with the motion controls, and then coming back seemed to fix it.

I screen recorded it here: adobepremiere_motionissue.mp4 - Google Drive

As you can see it does not affect every clip. It seems very random and I have not found a means of replicating the issue. It's just randomly throughout my 30 minute timeline.

Wow, can you believe it? Brand new feature release. You're never gonna guess which bug STILL EXISTS. Nearly 3 years and the bug still persists.

I'd bet money that it's only a couple simple lines of code, too. Would probably take someone a solid hour to fix, probably no more than a day. Whatever is determining the x coordinate of the mouse cursor isn't factoring in the scaling.

I'm looking into alternative software. It's very clear you don't care about your customers. You'd rather cram new features in than repair workflow-inhibiting bugs. New features are great, but you can't just ignore everything that's been broken for years.

Adobe, as a company, is a mess.

It's not just this bug. It's all bugs. I can't wait to see what new bugs you've introduced into Premiere Pro (2018). Every single release has bugs that require workarounds. Whatever QA testing you do before releasing isn't good enough, and it hasn't been since the beginning of Creative Cloud.

I'm paying way too much for broken software.

Did that and restarted the program. It is back now, but I'll edit some more and see if it goes half hidden again.

When I'm confident that it is resolved I'll mark this question as answered. Thank you very much!

If Premiere CC 2018 is not working...

If you are experiencing a huge difference between the 2017 and the 2018 version of Premiere, there are a few fixes that go beyond the simple delete cash files and delete preferences.

First thing that can definitely speed up the process is to have 3 separate HDD (or better SSD) to serve Premiere. It's not too costly, but the results will literally blow your mind. The setup is extremely simple:

  1. Have the main hard drive—where all software is installed—free from any working file or clips. It's always better to "leave alone" the hard drive that is holding your main software, this will speed up the opening of the software, update faster, etc etc...
  2. Have a dedicated hard drive exclusively for the clips and for the working files of Premiere. When opening a complex project there is a lot of reading to do and having these files on the same HDD that other software are running is not a good idea.
  3. Have another hard drive that will host only the media cash files. We all know that Premiere needs not only to read video files but to create peak files and media cash files per each clip and these files will be read each time we open the project. For this reason your bottleneck might be having all on one hard drive that needs to deliver too much information while working on the main OS and other software that you might have open at the same time.

By default the file is hidden in the common resources of Premiere, but you can choose a different folder and obviously a different hard drive.

Separating these operations will speed up incredibly your workflow and your exporting process as well because each of these operations that are extremely heavy will be separated on each hard drive.

If you have more $$$ you can have 3 RAID0 or (strip) to boost exponentially the read/write speed, always keeping in mind to have 3 separate locations to have clips/working files, cash and software.

Hope this helps and if it doesn't I recommend installing 2017 till the 2018 gets a few bugs fixed.

Hi everyone! I’m trying to capture video in Premiere Pro CC with the built in FaceTime camera on my brand new MacBook Pro. However the capture panel says the device is “Offline”. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kevin,

this is incorrect. The h.264 codec actually does allow for any number of non-standard formats and resolutions, however, many of the standard implementations of the codec, e.g. Adobe's, cap the resolution at 4096 pixels.

Oh that is messed up! It actually worked! But the key was CANCELING the Render after moving it. If I let it finish or do anything else it just reverted to the original place it was. But once I had moved and canceled it seems to be good there.

The only catch is my other dialogue boxes (i.e. a project loading) still appears in the top left corner. Alas, the Render Box is the most annoying one to see out of place and now that its back in order I don't think the others bug me.

Thanks for the tip Stefan!

Drifting is due to the footage having variable framerate. Convert to constant framerate before bringing it into Premiere.

no way to do this through AME using H.264. you can use other encoders like Handbrake.

All video is recorded at 60.00fps. Whatever the case, we have previously had zero issues with using rate-stretched footage. If this motion control issue is due to the footage being rate-stretched, then it is the first issue in two years of this company producing videos with their workflow.

As there are no 6K displays, what is the intended use of the exports?

I don't believe that will be possible.  Your best option is a proper camera.

Sarah: What version of Premiere Pro are you using? There's a known issue with imported clips losing their audio in the November 2016 release of Premiere Pro 2017: Known issues in Premiere Pro CC 2017

From that page:

Issue: When you try to import audio files with formats like AVCHD (MTS), mp3, and mp4 using Premiere Pro CC, you could get an error message which says, "The file has an unsupported compression type." This error could also be displayed with other Adobe audio and video products including After Effects and Media Encoder.

Workaround: Clear the Media Cache Database folder. If you still see an issue, change the file directory where the AVCHD files reside and check if the issue gets resolved.  Also check if this issue is related to your Creative Cloud(CC) activation. For more information, see Troubleshooting linking and importing errors with AVCHD (MTS) and MP4 files after upgrading to Premiere Pro CC.

Having this problem as well - session totally wiping when you use "Save As"... sometimes even with "Save as Copy"... this is ridiculous. These bugs are unacceptable!

You'd have to get in touch with Warner Brothers Studios and ask them for the necessary editing assets.

Subclips will behave as independent clips.  What you to do one won't affect others.
