Hi Reachist,
I have sent you a detailed reply,by e-mail, I hope it helps. Hi-8 was good in it's time but has been clearly superceeded by the latest cameras , the Canon 5 D Mark II's which we use, the Panasonic 3CCD's, even the occassionally shooting using the Canon HV20/30/40 tape based anamorphic HDV 1440 x 1080i.
It appears HDV/mpeg-2 is nearly dead in the water , but, still produces lovely video.depending on the lenses etc.
and the newer Sony HXR-NX30 for travel work is a stunning Professional videocamera at a little under $2400, whereas I would have paid over $3000 for interchangeable lens set up for the older Hi-8 Canons, but, it was great camera and a lot of fun to use.
Regards,
Bob
