The original poster said he was going to lower the gain.
Audition does have a mutitrack editor and you could have two trackes, scroll through as I suggested, and when you find a area with ckipping, select the damaged area, set markers, and then selecting the clean material (using the markers), cutting and pasting it over the damaged material.
Note that if the two channels were recorded as stereo, you could use keyframed panning????
